_Will all of you people who somehow think that you need to run Windows on your computer please listen:_
_You have chosen an operating system which is never concerned with your privacy or security. Instead its primary focus is to give you features — whiz-bang bells and whistles. It is your choice to run this operating system. It may be necessary so you can trade documents with your kids, or maybe it’s the best intersection of what you can afford and what you are capable of doing on a computer. Whatever._
_Unfortunately, because Windows is not secure, that means that you as a user have to secure it. Don’t worry, you don’t have to take any classes. You just have to install an anti-virus package (like Norton Antivirus) and pay for the yearly updates, and you have to make sure that your computer keeps itself up to date using Windows Update. If your computer can’t use Windows Update, then it’s too old, and it needs to be disconnected from the internet. This is not a joke; I am 100% serious. Pull the plug._
_You see, literally thousands of you are infected by the latest virus, and are in the process of sending tens of thousands of emails to everybody you’ve ever heard of and some people whom you haven’t heard of. This wouldn’t be that big of a deal to me, but the problem is, your security problems have become my problems, because a lot of those emails are either addressed to me, or claim to be from me. And that means that my mailbox is filling up with garbage, either copies of the virus that you all have, or reports from your ISPs that you won’t accept the virus with which I was trying to infect you — which is bogus, since I am not infected by that virus. This is your fault as Windows users who don’t keep up with security, and not mine._
_I am not being self-righteous; I have a Windows machine at work, but I keep it up-to-date and I have the latest virus definitions on it from Norton at any given time. At home I run secure platforms like Macintosh and Linux, but I am not blind — they sometimes have security problems as well, and so I have to work to keep all of them patched regularly. That’s life in the internet-connected world._
_But every major virus or worm or trojan runs on Windows, and is spread by clueless users who don’t keep up with anti-virus updates and Windows updates._
_I’m begging you, before I have to delete another thousand (yes, thousand) bogus emails — please either update your antivirus and Windows systems, or stop running Windows, or get off the internet. For the good of the internet, before we have to change email so much that it doesn’t work anymore, please fix this now. There is no technological solution; the only solution is for you to take charge of your internet connection and computer as an individual. I already told you how; it’s not hard._
_If you can’t handle this, then you need to leave the internet now. Go to your public libraries, use webmail, get a real operating system, or just leave the internet to the professionals and those who can follow instructions._
